Land Rover Repair: Freelander 2005 2ltr Diesel, land rover dealer, bmw x3

Question
Our freelander developed a power problem. It had an intermitent lack of power, wouldn't go above 50mph. It has subsequently had a full service and now won't reach much over 30mph. This morning it now won't start. Cranks over fine it's as though its getting no fuel. this happened once before the service. tried it again an hour later and it fired up, hoping for the same in order to get it to the garage.

Answer
Hi Jim,

could be air in the system or a leaking injector.

A fellow Freelander owner once wrote about injector leaks:

"There is a very simple test to check if they are all working properly but you do have to remove the inlet manifold to get to them. Once everything is out of the way you just remove the leak-off pipes from the top of the injectors (making sure you pinch it so as not to leak) and turn the ignition to activate the fuel pump.

If any of the injectors leak they are faulty and will stop the vehicle from starting."

Another owner had trouble with lack of power and here's what he had to say:

..."had a problem a while ago with no power on my TD4 '03. When you depress the accelerator, there was a very slow reaction until turbo kicks in. On the road I had no power to even emerge in to the traffic. That was scary ;) The air sensor is mounted just behind filter box (just follow the air duct) in oval shaped plastic box with wire. I got spare parts from Euro Car parts but the original MHK101130L cost about £158+VAT (£198+VAT Land Rover Dealer). Now, there is a trick with this sensor: there is another MHK101130 but without 'L' at the end used for some Rover 75 or BMW X3. Cost is about £68+VAT. I is working for me perfectly. I'm not sure but in my case we did disassembling all relevant parts in order to get to the sensor, but after comparing those two (old and new) we realise that you can only exchange the sensor not all stuff with the box. Sensor only is hold by 2 screws on that box its coming with and you can unplug, transfer new sensor to the old box. That will save you 1-2h of taking apart everything. Landrover wants to charge me £198+VAT + 1h labour at £120 p/h. Ridiculous. It cost me only about £80 (comparing to what they wants) and my spare time. Think about the knowledge you will gain? ;-))) "

There are many Freelander owners there who've reported how they've solved startup problems without going to the dealership.

Best of luck,
