Land Rover Repair: cat converter, catalitic converters, o2 sensors

Question
i just now rebuilt my engine on my 97 discovery. i took the catalitic converters off. what can i do with the O2 sensors and the check engine light to come off without replacing the wire harness? will it run better?

Answer
If your vehicle is a US market Rover, configired for catalysts, the check engine light will never go out until the four o2 sensors are in place and returning readings that show both catalysts are functioning.

The only way to make the light go out would be to reprogram the GEMS controller for a foreign market where catalysts are not needed.  Austrailia may be an example - you would have to check.  However, if you do that, the vehicle woudl not pass emission test in much of the US anyway.
