Land Rover Repair: Freelander shuddering, cv joints, prop shaft

Question
My 1999 freelander shudders when your foot is removed from the accelerator and also when changing down gears(it is 5 speed 4 cylinder turbo diesel). With both front wheels off the ground you can turn one front wheel and the other rotates in the opposite direction. With only one front wheel off the ground the wheel can only be turned up to 1/4 of a turn in either direction and then seems to lock up. When the movement of the wheel stops the engine rocks, ie one direction rocks forward and the other rocks rear. The shudder does not appear to happen when the gearbox is in neutral and the engine runs down once foot is removed from the accelerator. With both wheels raised on one side, turning the rear causes the front to turn. Also appears to have a clicking noise with the steering in full lock (forward only)cant remember which way (left or right).
I am about to remove the prop shaft to remove drive to the rear wheels to isolate everything rear of the IRD.
Any help is greatly appreciated in trying to narrow this down.
Thank you in advance.

Answer
The behaviour you describe re jacking and turning is normal.  The click may point to failing cv joints in the front axle.  Sometimes it helps to put the vehicle on a lift and run it while observing from beneath.

It's hard to give any more specific advice without seeing it.

Good luck
