Land Rover Repair: trans failsafe prog. warning light, warning light, stupid move

Question
hello
the warning light trans. failsafe prog. indicator lit up ony my 2003 range rover hse. then suddenly it would not pull anymore. 6k rpms and it only runs 5mph then would stall.  what could be the problem. some said it might be the sensor. but one said i might have to replace the whole transmission which would cost a fortune. please help. thanks

Answer
If you were so unwise as to rev your vehicle to 6,000 rpm while it was in gear and not moving you have almost certainly done serious damage inside the gearbox.  What possesed you do do such a thing?  If the vehicle does not move at 1500 rpm, that's enough!  You should never keep revving it when you sense an abnormality at lower engine speed.  Increasing the speed in the face of a problem virtually assured damage.

Very few people rebuild those newer ZF gearboxes.  At our service department, we send them to ZF.  I'd predict a repair bill in the vicinity of $6k in most of the US

Sometimes the path to learning sensitivity with mechanical things is costly.

Good luck with it
