Land Rover Repair: Oil leaking from side of metal valve cover, land rover discovery, land rover discovery ii

Dear John,

We have a Land Rover Discovery II. Last month my wife blew the head gasket. The dealer said they did a "chemical test" and one cylinder, #2 was blown. They said oil mixed with the coolant. It cost me a s**t load of money. Now the left side of the black valve cover is leaking a little bit of oil. Is this normal?

Answer
No, that suggests the gasket may have slipped when they refitted it.  The valve covers were removed if the heads were off, so that should be a warranty issue if indeed that's what is wrong.
