Land Rover Repair: Dragging Brakes, caliper pistons, rubber seals

Question
My 2000 Disco II has an intermittent problem with dragging rear brakes. The first time it happen I pulled the wheel but all seemed fine and driving went well for several weeks after. The next time it happen both rear wheels dragged with one being worst that the other. There are no warning lights and no indication of the problem other than slowing down of course.  I seem to be able to free the brakes for a short period by applying them sharply.  Is this a common problem with Land Rover and what would you suggest might cause the problem?

Answer
Hi Allyson,

no this is not common to LR.  It could be that your calipers are in need of repair or perhaps your rear discs are worn down.  Worse case would be that your Master Cylinder (MC) has a problem reaching the brakes furthest from the MC.

I'd consider having your brakes inspected at a local brake shop just to be safe.  There are caliper rebuild kits for about $100 that you can buy...or you can have any reputable brake shop repair them.

I know over time, the road gunk mixed with the brake dust etc. can gum up the caliper pistons.  Perhaps they are having trouble moving in and out due to worn rubber seals or corrosion.

Best of luck,
