Land Rover Repair: central locking/anti-theft alarm, door latch, relevant service

Question
Okay so i went out for a drink one Friday night and ended up losing my keys to my recently bought(4 months ago)1996 used Disco SE7. When i bought the car it did not come with a fob/remote control but that was okay because the central locking actually worked and would disable/enable the alarm in the event that it went off or whatever the case(Which it had before and i was easily able to disable it with my key central locking/unlocking it from the front door). I had locksmiths come out and re-cut me a flawless key and although the key worked the anti-theft/alarm could not be disabled because the central locking decided to just stop working. The locksmith took off the front passenger side panel and key lock out to make the coded key cuts. Did he not reconnect something or did he cause a short in this process? I know its not a transponder issue in the key cause i called the dealership and was told there were none for 96. I know the key is flawless cause i am actually able to get my engine to turn with the anti-theft fuses pulled but since it has a (directly from the manual) "sophisticated electronic anti-theft system and engine immobilization system" it wont feed the engine fuel. Any ideals on what could of caused the central locking to go out rather than having to bypass the infamous disco alarm? anti-theft

Answer
It sounds like the switches in the door latch are either disconnected or they have failed.  In most cases this would be cured with a new latch, but in your case I'd take it back apart and see if it's just assembled wrong.

You might want to buy a day's access at Land Rover's service site, www.landrovertechinfo.com to download all the relevant service manuals and illustrations.

And remember . . . locksmiths are not Land Rover technicians.  The locksmaith may not have the general repair skills needed for this job
