Land Rover Repair: noisey lifter in 2000 disco, shaft assemblies, rocker shaft

one of the lifters is make a ticking noise when you pull of. i've been told it will cost 2 grand to fix. any suggestions? how much should it cost? i want to sell it and don't want to spend that much, but also don't want to screw somebody. Or get screwed.Thank you very much

The rocker shaft assemblies are $500 each, and it's a full day's work to change them.  The price you are quotes - when you add in gaskets and ancillary stuff - does not sound out of line to me, given labor rates around $100/hour.

If rocker shafts are the problem, new ones are the solution.

I can't comment on the need for rockers because I can't see your truck but I will say it's not unusual.
