Land Rover Repair: 2002 Disco II - Flashing Drive, Manual and Sport Mode, radiator system, independent land

Question
I also have the problem of the ABS, TC, and Hill Descent warning lights
coming on. This has been solved by replacing the ABS sensors (several
times). Three weeks ago the evil 3 come on, two weeks ago the battery
warning light stays on,  last night I came to a stop sign, the truck lurched, the
D on the shift started flashing, the M and S on the dash started flashing and
it wouldn't move.  After several seconds, I pushed on the gas and it slowly
started going and I drove it slowly home - luckily my house was one block
away!  I had noticed for the past couple of months that after initially starting,
I'll push the gas and it hesitates.  10 seconds later it's fine and off we go. It
has 78K.  I have already replaced the brakes twice, replaced sensors 4 times,
replaced the radiator system (that was costly and painful).  I have a regular
mechanic and a specialized independent Land Rover (Ferrari, Jaguar, Bentley)
mechanic.  I want to know what I'm in for before I have it towed in since my
last visit to the LR mechanic left me $3k poorer!  This truck has been great
for getting to the mountains (skiing), but I'm a single mom and I'm wondering
if the cost of repairs are going to be worth it?  Any help you can provide will
be greatly appreciated!

Answer
The symptoms you describe sure sound like something is failing in the transmission.  And it might be another $3k repair if that's the case.  If repair bills of this magnitude are going to be problematic for you (based on your statement) you might consider a Subaru as a much less costly but still capable way to reach the mountains.

As these trucks get older, their service needs increase, and they usually end up costing 3-5k per year in maintenance to keep them in top shape.  If that's too much for the budget, I'd recognize that fact before it kills you and get something different.
