Land Rover Repair: 98 Land Rover Disco, rocker arm assemblies, hydraulic lifters

Question
I have a ticking sound coming from the area around the transmission and transfer case. Have you seen this before because I had the vehicle put on a computer and says there isn't anything wrong. The check engine light has not came on at all.The ticking sound only happens after the vehicle warms up and stops after the speed gets up to around 30 mph and returns at idle.

Answer
It is unusual to hear a sound around the transmission and transfer case, but sound does travel.  A ticking sound coming from the engine when warm is very common on these cars.  There are numerous causes of this.  The most severe would be a loose cylinder liner.  If this is the case, you would have to replace the block or try to have the liner(s) replaced.  Other causes, such as hydraulic lifters or rocker arm assemblies, are aggravating, but cause no harm. To definitively diagnose, the engine would have to be stripped down, but you could try letting a qualified Land Rover mechanic take a listen.
