Land Rover Repair: brakes, brake rotor, performance complaints

Question
hi there....
re: 2003 HSE7 Disco 52,000K miles
Is it true you need to replace the brake rotor when you replace the brake pads? I was informed that since the Land Rover rotors are thin to start with....they need to be replaced with the pad.

Could you reccomend a brand of pads and rotors for the above mentioned vehicle? and if all 4 need to be replaced how many hours should I be billed for (approx.)?

Thank you for your time and knowledge.

Answer
If the only concern is "acceptable wear," then you probably get two sets of rear brake pads for every set of rotors.  However, that's not the whole story.  If the rotors become grooved or rusty, they should be changed.  In addition, new rotors and pads (fitted together) are less likely to squeal and produce performance complaints.

Therefore it's the prevailing practice at many shops to do them together, especially at that mileage.  Having explained that, you could certainly discuss your options.

Changing pads may take an hour.  Changing rotors is perhaps 30-40 minutes more.  Changing the fluid is another hour, or a bit more, and requires an Autologic or T4 or IDS test system to run the pump.

The pad and rotor time is simply repeated for the front.  Fluid change applies to all four wheels.
