How does one replace a thermostat on a 2002 Freelander?

This can be done in two ways.  Either remove the inlet manifold for access or you can just struggle to remove the thermostat with the manifold in position, using a quarter drive socket set with extensions.  This is a very tight, awkward job.  You wil probably also need to replace the plastic connecting pipes as they often break during replacement of the thermostat or are already broken.
