Land Rover Repair: Intake Gasket/Water Pump, applicable tools, manifold design

Question
Is it possible for someone who has not worked on cars, but willing to get dirty, to replace the intake manifold and water pump?

If I was to get the repair manual and applicable tools, could this be accomplished?

I took it in to the shop because my temperature gauge was going high with my service engine light on.  They said they need to replace the intake manifold (design problem that was later fixed, but not warranted) and the water pump and belt.

Thanks a bunch.

Answer
There are no special tricks to either of those jobs.  Both can be done with standard hand tools.  I can't really say if YOU can do it because I have no idea of your capabilities.

I will say this:  At a dealership, those jobs would be rated for a mid-level tech.  That is, they'd be too complex for a beginner, but not an efficient use of time for the top guy.

On a Discovery II they'd be 5 hours of work, maybe more, at the dealership.

Hope that comparison helps.
