Land Rover Repair: Discovery tranny, t4 system, wrong conclusion

Question
We have an 03 Discovery that we can't manually down-shift
to 1st gear. We can shift through every other gear with no
problems and have tried sport and manual mode. I've tried
while driving and while stopped.

My first suggestion is to get a Rover specialist to drive the truck and see if you are right about not selecting 1st.  If necessary, they can use the T4 system to read gear position and even manually operate valves.  I'd do that before jumping to the possible wrong conclusion that there's a problem.
