Land Rover Repair: Freelander Overheating, coolant levels, freelanders

Question
John, I have a '04Freelender. From time to time, the coolant gauge goes haywire...up & down constantly. When I check my coolant levels, I run about a quart low. I took it to the dealership and they stated that they pressurized it and found no leaks. So they're take was that I am experiencing evaporation through the engine and the only solution is to have a new engine installed. They felt that my remaining engine life may be 4 weeks or 2 years...its a gamble. Have you heard of anything like this before?

Thanks for your help

Answer
I'm sorry to say that engine failures like the dealer told you about are all too common on Freelanders.  I can't say if yo uhave the problem without seeing it, but if that's what the dealer says, I would not second guess them from here.  And as they say, if it has linder failure there is no telling how much longer it will last, though two months is more likely than two years.
