Land Rover Repair: 95 Disco serpentine belt, tensioner pulley, power steering pump

Question
HOW DO i FIT A FANBELT TO MY DISCOVERY 1995?

Answer
Hi Kaye and Geraldine,

first, may I suggest you find yourself a RAVE CD which contains all the workshop info you need to repair your fine Disco, including a belt placement diagram.

You'll need a long ratchet with a socket and attach it to the tensioner pulley nut.  Most NAPA, Advance Auto, ... auto parts shops sell tensioner ratchet sets.  Nice to have.

Release tension on the belt by pulling on the ratchet and thus moving the tensioner pulley away from the belt.  Quickly slip off the belt and REMEMBER THE EXACT PLACEMENT OF THE BELT.  Trace out the belt feed on the inside of your engine compartment using a permanent magic marker  This is good for those who have never replaced belts on the LR.  I once had a local mechanic feed the belt incorrectly.  I found out about 3 hours later - with a dead battery!

Clockwise, the belt feeds over the alternator, down under the water pump, up over the power steering pump, then back down under the crankwheel, up over the tensioner pulley, and finally around the Air Condition (AC) compressor to return to the alternator.

IF you don't have AC then the belt goes around the tensioner pulley and back over the alternator.  All else applies.

IF you need a diagram, send me an email and I'll reply with the appropriate page.

Best of luck,

JohnMc

NB: nice Disco!  Automatic or 5 speed manual?  Mine's a 5 speed manual with close to 400,000 kms.  Still runs well.
