Land Rover Repair: Wont Shift into 4th gear, land rover discovery, overdrive switch

Question
I own a 1996 Land Rover Discovery 1, it will not shift into fourth gear. the car will get up to about 50 and will almost jolt or attempt to shift but it feels like something tells it to stay in third. many people have told me that it was just an overdrive switch but it turns out it wasn't. the check engine light is on along with the anti-lock light (if that has anything to do with it). I've heard many things that people say what it could be, like the cam sensor or the speed sensor or even the computer. Also sometimes when you first start the car and put it into drive it will just stay in what seems to be neutral unless you play with the differential stick or rev the engine up to 2000 RPM's.(whether this is a separate problem from the transmission or not i don't know) PLEASE HELP!

Answer
The transmission on this car is purely mechanical.  The ABS and check engine lights are unrelated to the transmission problem.  You can have these codes read and deal with the resulting issues separately.  All of the sensors you desribe are electrical and have nothing to do with the transmission.

It sounds to me like you need a transmission since you have trouble shifting into 1st and no fourth gear.  I can't really assist you further with this issye without a physical inspection.
