Land Rover Repair: tres amigos, break pads, light bulbs

Question
hello john first i like to thank you for all of your support and great advice.
I've had "the 3 amigos" for about a cpl of months. i have spent many hours researching this issue and cant yet come up with an answer.

Before the amigos appeared: changed oil, changed break pads all around, changed rear bumper break light bulbs, changed front driver side link assembly(I'm not sure of name, small piece had to change in order for alignment to be corrected)a couple of days later the amigos came on and off after a week they decided to remain on.

i was told by the dealer while 3 amigos are on none of these features are working, however the other day i slammed on the breaks going down hill over some pebbles and the wheels kind of skated and the break pedal vibrated, very odd, does this mean i have abs? if not how do i check if i have abs as well as tc?

i was also told at dealer its the abs modulator, also told it may be the sensors.

they way i see it the dealer can tell me the problem exactly for about $175. is there a less expensive way in pinpointing the issue so then i can cough up all of my money to the dealer?
how much can some other place charge me for checking the codes and finding the problem?

Answer
Hola Edison!

Sorry to read that you have the 3 amigos on board.  Typical LR response is to swap out until fixed.  Charging you $175 to verify what's wrong is also typical.  So much for customer relations.

I believe that the ABS modulator is the real cause of this.  It is a very common problem with LR's and its taking far too long for LR to conclude where the problem resides.

I read from other LR owners that the final fix is a newer (redesigned) ABS modulator.  If you do have to replace it, make sure it was manufactured within the last year or two.   Don't let them put on old stock (which they want to get rid of) as you'll probably have the problem reappear in a few years time.

Its true that the sensors have been known to cause trouble too but most often is the modulator.

Perhaps your best bet is to find an independent LR mechanic close to you.  Send me an email and include where you'd like to have your LR repaired.  If possible, I'll try to find a mechanic close to you.

The problem I have with dealers is that if the swapped part does NOT resolved the problem, they won't refund my money.  Furthermore, I would have to purchase more parts in the hope that the problem is fixed.  More than once, I've had to endure this sloppy guesswork in fixing my expensive vehicle.  Could it be on purpose?  Gee...I wonder...

Best of luck,

JohnMc

NB:  I think you may have been describing the balljoints - crucial for wheel alignment.
