Land Rover Repair: transfer case and axles, tranfer case, rear diff

Question
I have a 97 disco with a transfer case that ia knocking i know that it must be replaced but it is 65 miles to my mechanic i was told that you could remove the front axle going into the case and run it in two wheel drive.  I do not understand how this would work becasue to my knowledge both the front and rear diffs. are running off of the same tranfer case.  Am i correct or can i remove the front axle and run it in two wheel drive? Thanks!

Answer
It is possible to run the vehicle in 2WD in diff lock.  You could take the front or the rear diff off if you do this. But this will do you no good if the transfer case is the problem because as you stated they both run from the same transfer case.

If you are mechanically inclined, perhaps you would be better off having a transfer case shipped to you so you can install it yourself.  If you want a used Discovery I transfer case, contact us through www.britisheurotech.com

Good luck!
