Land Rover Repair: Disco II wont crank, obdii code reader, knucklebuster

Question
2001 disco II, water pump went bad so I replaced it. I took it out on a drive to make sure all was right. I got about ten miles and the truck just died, no sputtering or warning, just died. After coming to a stop I tried to crank it again. It would hit and try to crank but not. After a couple of hours I tried again and now it will not even hit. It will start if I spray ether into the intake but of course when that burns off (3 seconds) it shuts back off. I checked the sensor beside the crank to make sure the serpentine belt did not damage it when I took it off and back on, and no visible damage. Any idea where I should look.    Thanks for your time.  Jim Murray

Answer
Hi Jim,

sounds like a crank sensor.  Could be fuel pump but since you've already worked around the sensor, my guess would be that first.  They are not that expensive to replace but a real knucklebuster.

Next would be MAF - maybe you can try unplugging the MAF and see if its cranks over.  Could run without a MAF but would generate some new codes.

Can you borrow a OBDII code reader?

Best of luck,
