Land Rover Repair: Non recoginition of brakes., brake switch, auto transmission

Question
I drove my 96 Disco to the Doc's office, no problem.  Go to leave and it starts up fine but I could not shift the auto transmission out of park.  Finally figured out that the brake lights weren't coming on when the pedal was pushed.  I took the sensor (if that is what is called) of the brake pedal and crossed the green/orange and green/purple wires so that I could drive it home with the brake lights on the entire time, but still can't get the key out.  What is the actual problem causing this?

Answer
The key is held in place by the "key release solenoid."

As to what's wrong . . . you can go to www.landrovertechinfo.com and download a wiring diagram and trace the circuits.  There are no computers involved; it's all stuff you can trace with a multimeter.

And you probably need a brake switch too
