Land Rover Repair: Disco 2000 Series II, intake plenum, disco 2000

Question
Hi John, my wipers have always been noisy, but today (in the middle of a
Miami T-storm) they started making the worst of all sounds, and kept getting
stuck. I looked under the hood, and on that tray?...plastic protector in font of
the wiper arms there were 3 screws. Could this be the problem? If so, how do
I loosen that area to be able to refasten the screws. I'm sure the dealer will
charge a gazillion dollars. Also, what wiper blades do you recommend? My
blades (from dealer) last nothing, and everything is blamed on the Miami sun.
I love my Rover, but everything is so expensive. Thank you, stay safe and be
well.
Mari

Hi Mari,

The air intake plenum (moulded piece under wiper arm) is held in place by the wiper arm nuts and washers.  Could these have come loose?

You could try lubricating the wiper linkage found under the air intake plenum.  You would have to remove the wiper blade arms - lift up the nut cover at the base of the wipers and undo the nuts on each wiper.

With the air intake cover and wipers removed, you could activate the wiper switch and watch to see any abnormal movement along the linkage.  It should be smooth and noise free otherwise something is loose or broken.  Spray the linkage parts with a lubricant to see if it makes a difference.

It is not uncommon for the wiper linkage assembly to seize over time.  The best fix is to replace the linkage.

As for which wipers to buy, consider that the more heat and friction there is, the more the rubber softens and wears down.  In Miami, heat is your concern and a local auto parts store should be able to suggest a better blade then someone from the Great White North - like me :)

I use a Jaguar blade in the summer and a tri-blade in the winter. The Jag blade has a wind foil that presses the blade against the glass.  Nice - and it matches my wiper arm so there was no need to customize it. It fit right out of the package!

If you need printed instructions for the wiper linkage, send me an email and I'll respond with the techsheet.
