Land Rover Repair: running rough/whining noise, head gasket leak, tensioner pulley

Question
Hello,I have a 2000 disco with 74k and it seems to idles rough and makes a whining noise when it idles up.the serpentine belt needs to be changed and I have a head gasket leak.what could be the cause of my problem? Also, what are some of the warning signs that you may have major engine problems of any sort?

Answer
Hi Mark,

the whinning noise may be a bearing from one of the pulleys - perhaps the tensioner pulley.  Remove the belt and start the engine to see if whinning noise disappears.  IF not, its something within the engine itself.

Headgasket should be replaced as soon as you can afford it.  The mess that this is causing can lead to other troubles and even an engine loss (dropped sleeve).  Signs of trouble are loss of power, hesitation, misfires to mention only a few.  A rough idle is probably due to the headgasket and it can get worse.  Don't procrastinate and get it fixed asap - that's my advise.
