Land Rover Repair: Discovery 1 : Check engine light, throttle position sensor, web rover

Question
I have a 97 Disco 1 automatic with Electronic Diesel Control. This has a problem where at slight throttle openings the engine cuts back to tickover and the check engine light comes on, moving the throttle pedal in either direction results in the engine picking up revs again. I have replaced the Throttle Position Sensor(£337!) and the problem still occurs. I can't keep on replacing expensive parts in the hope it fixes the problem, do you have any suggestions as to what to do next?

Answer
Hi Derek,

some owners think its the EGR control solenoid, others think its a load relay.  I'd hate to suggest a component and have you swap out another component for just reason.

You mention CEL was on - what codes did you get?

Here's a link that may help.  It concerns oil leaking onto an electrical harness - may be the cause and its easy (cheap) to inspect and fix (you never know):

http://web-rover.co.uk/nav.php?p=td5kb/oilharness

You may want to keep this link as a resource.  Loaded with info and other TDi owners closer to home for you.

Otherwise, to avoid swapping parts for nothing, you'll have to connect your Disco to a testbook diagnostic and see the possible causes.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
