Land Rover Repair: 98 Disco ABS light, independent mechanic, modulator

Question
I recently purchased a 1998 Discovery and I love it but shortly after I bought it the "Anti Lock" light in the dash came on.  The brakes feel tight and effective so I suspect it is a sensor failure.  How hard would it be to remove this light and what would be the future consequences of doing so?

Answer
Hi Luke,

not a good idea to just remove the ABS light.  Its true that some ABS faults are sensor related but it could also be your ABS modulator or a seal leak.

Some OBDII readers can read the fault code and give you more details.  A LR mechanic can also give you more details and help you decide to fix the problem or live with the ABS light.

If you really want to remove the light, you'll have to dismantle the dash and pull the light out from behind.  Should a more serious ABS fault be detected, you'll never know.  Not to mention, if LR ever decides to recall the ABS modulator, you may void your chances (if the dealership wants to be rigid about tampering policies).

I suggest you find a local independent mechanic that works on LR's and ask for an evaluation and estimate on this.
