Land Rover Repair: range rover p38 overheating problem, range rover p38, head gasket leak

Question
I have a w reg p38 4.0 hse range rover. i drive along then all of a sudden the temp needle goes straight over to red and the light comes on, then 30 seconds later back to normal i also loose the air con when the temp goes bananas.
any idea what it could be

Your cooling system may be low, or have air in it.  The most likely cause of this problem is a slight head gasket leak that allows combustion gases into the cooling system.
