Land Rover Repair: LR Disco II - difficult start and stalled, spark plug wires, advance auto parts

Question
My 01 Dico II would not start this morning the engine would turn over but it would not start. Tried it a few times changing it from Park to neutral thinking it was not completely in park, finally started, drove to work fine. Traffic time after work turned the a/c on it started idling funny (really low) then went down to 0 RPM and died at a complete stop sitting in traffic. Tried to start again a few minutes later, started fine.  Got home kept a/c off, let it sit in the driveway for awhile tried to start again, will not start.  Please help if you can..

Answer
Hi Patricia,

could be a combination of problems;  maybe the alternator is at fault or the battery is unable to hold a charge.  If you have an Advance Auto parts store nearby, they usually will test both the Alt and battery to determine if they are working at their peak performance.

Perhaps by turning the AC on, you put a drain on the electrical that the ALT could just not cope with - resulting in the engine stall.

Same time, have someone check the spark plug wires and coilpack, just be sure they are working properly.  If you have old spark plug wires, there may my arcing (a loss of electricity) and more of drain on the battery.

If the ALT is not charging the battery properly, it may only be partially charging the battery which results in a difficult start the next morning.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
