Land Rover Repair: Disco tdi 1995, axle shaft, cv joint

Question
QUESTION: The car was running fine down freeway at 100k's then lost transmission. the ewngine runs fine and when you put it in gear nothing happens when  the clutch released except a whirring noise. What do you think
ANSWER: The most likely failure is an axle shaft or CV joint.  Jack up each corner and try and spin the wheel while the truck is in gear, not running.

If one wheel spins free (one probably will) the failure is in that axle or hub/cv.

It's also possible you broke a driveshaft, in which case both wheels of an axle will spin free.  You should be able to see that under the truck.

If they are all tight, the failure is in the clutch, transmission, or transfer case and you will have to do some dismantling to learn more.

QUESTION: Thanks for your help.I am basically hopeles at mechanics and have to rely on a professiona but would the first two scenarios be gradual or sudden and also in what order of cost are we talking in time and replacement parts[roughly]
Is there anything we can do for you  in appreciation of your advice

Answer
Everything I listed is a sudden breakage kind of thing.  Works one second, gone the next.  Repair costs could be anywhere, from a hundred pound axle to a thousand or more for a gearbox.  You won't know till you figure out what went.

As to anything you could do . . .just give us a good rating and nomination in the feedback section.

Good luck to you
