Land Rover Repair: gasses leaking around valve, pitched whine, metal debris

Question
1995 Discovery 3.9 V8 5 speed.  for about 3 weeks I have had a steadily increasing leak around the rearmost valve on the right side of my engine.  At first it was just a high pitched whine on acceleration and now it is there constantly.  It's gotten so loud that I finally broke down and removed the valve cover to see if I could identify the problem.  I figured the spring might have broken. Everything looks fine just makes a lot of sucking or blowing everytime that particular spring (the last one all the way back on the right side of the engine) is pushed down by the rocker.  Spark plug looks good burned a light color, no metal debris on it. Can this be fixed without removing the head, am I looking at a valve job/ head job, or a new engine?  Any advice or input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Keith

Answer
Any leakage around the valves requires cylinder head removal.

But I am not sure that's what you are hearing.  I wonder if you are hearing exhaust leakage or intake leakage??
