Land Rover Repair: All Brake lights on - 3 amigos, land rover discovery, wheel sensors

Question
I have a 2000 Land Rover Discovery Series 2. Recently the ABS, downhill warning light, and the TC light came on, all at the same time. (all referring to a braking issue). Any idea what this could mean?? I did replace the front brakes not too long ago, but everything seemed to be working fine. Every now and then i do hear a sound, similar to that of the traction control system..(slipping/readjusting)....but it's rare.
thanks!!

Answer
Hi Steve,

this usually is traced to the ABS modulator, the wheel sensors, seals within the modulator or the wheel hub, electrical faults within the ABS controls, contamination on the wheel sensors, or a combination of any one of these.   Your LR dealer or a mechanic with a testbook diagnostic device can determine what ABS fault codes are present and roughly guess where to look.

Its a known problem within the LR owners community but LR might say otherwise.  Just look on this website and you'll see many questions regarding this exact problem.

One owner told me he found the trouble to be grease contamination leaking from the axle seal onto the wheel sensor.  Another owner wrote that the wheel sensor wires were corroded.  Still another owner wrote that a seal on the ABS modulator failed.  Seems like there can be many causes and you have to wonder about the initial design.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
