Land Rover Repair: ecu / gear box, range rover p38, supposibly

Question
99 range 4.6hse
if i put it in D it will not go any where. its like as if it was in neutral.  in order for it to start moving i have to put in 1st and as soon as its going about 5mph i switch it back to D and its fine from there untill i stop or go at a very low speed " about 5mph or so". it goes back to the bigginig "newtral". i have to start the hole process again.
if in d or 1 or anything and i push the accelator to much it makes a sound like skipping the links "krick, crick, crick.  or i am pulling something. its like it does not grab the gears.  any sugestions?
i saw a range rover p38 gear box ecu. supposibly is a small chip which tells the transmission to shift and to do what ever it needs to do.  maybe this is the problem.  what do you think

thank you

Answer
I think you may have two failures.  The failure to go when you put the truck in gear is probably a clutch problem inside the transmission.

The clicking is probably the slipping of a worn out chain in the transfer case.

I think you are looking at two different repairs.  I've seen that situation before.
