Land Rover Repair: Cracked Engine Block 04 Disco, service intervals, cracked block

Question
Hi, we've been told that our 04 Discovery with 40,000 Miles has a cracked engine block.  The vehicle is under warranty but they are refusing to cover it because we can't find an oil change receipt 8k miles to 17k miles.  We've had every service and oil change done at the dealer with the exception of 2.  We provided the reciept for the 26k oil change.  The dealer has done all others plus the service intervals.  The missing oil change was performed but we are continuing to search for who did it as we've moved to another town.

We noticed engine knocking at 38k miles and brought it in for the service.  They said no problems.  the knocking continued we brought it back again and again.  Now they say that the engine block is cracked and under warranty but LR Service wont cover it because of the missing oil change receipt from 2005.

My question is two parts?
What can cause an engine block crack? (we live in Minnesota)

Can a engine block crack becuase of a missing oil change 20k plus miles ago?

Any clarity you can impart is much appreciated.

Answer
Cracked blocks are usually a result of freezing because the coolant has been diluted with water.

I am not sure you have a cracked block.  More often, Rovers fail from dropped liners in the block.  To understand that I refer you to an article on that topic on my web site, www.robisonservice.com > service > land rover > articles.

In either case oil change frequency would not have anything to do with the problem.

It is also possible that you have sludge damage in the motor.  Sludge damage happens when the oil does not get changed often enough.

There is not enough information to give a better answer than that.
