Land Rover Repair: 94 Disco Sputtering, throttle position sensor, cylinder compression

Question
John,
I hope you can help me.  My 94 Disco has started sputtering on take off.  Once I get to cruising speed it's fine.  I thought it was the Throttle Position Sensor, but it still continues to sputter once the engine become hot.

Please advise.

Thanks
Vaanii

Answer
Hi Vaanii,

I've had TPS problems before.  They are usually random idles and rev's that bounce all over the place.  Usually began with a cold engine then disappear once the engine was hot.

Do you notice hesitation?

IF the engine hesitates and you are hearing a popping noise, it could be one of the following:

fouled or dirty air filter;
ignition wires may be bad;
some type of ignition problem - examine distributor cap or rotor;
ignition module may be bad;
check cylinder compression to determine engine condition.

Best of luck,
