Land Rover Repair: Disco 1 EGR or ??? stalling on hot start, coolant temp, engine sensors

Question
Hello,
I have a '98 Disco 1, 4ltr and after a run and a short stop it will start but falter and run as though it is very rich. Some backfire at the intake, soot on the intact screen after the filter. This lasts for a few minutes and then all is well. It shows a P1177 and a P1179 code. Plugs, wires, coolant temp sensor and thermostat have been changed. Back in the days before enlightenment when I drove Chevys, a problem like this was usually the EGR staying open and messing with the vacuum and banging a ball of hot exhaust into your intake manifold.Pulling the vacuum line off of the EGR and putting a screw in the vacuum line to plug it up took care of it. Yes, I do feel guilty about the pollution...as I said it was before my enlghtment that lead me to Rover's. Any ideas???
Thanks

Answer
Land Rovers don't use that EGR system.  I have seen the valves stick, though, and they can backfire into the intake . . . I suggest you get a scan tool and watch the live data from the engine sensors when it begins to stumble after a run and stop, as you say.  You'll probably see one signal that's off and causing your trouble.
