Land Rover Repair: 98 Discovery, temperature gauge, rattling sound

Question
Hi, My Discovery had to be towed home after it stopped on the road.  The previous night, I heard a rattling sound, but it makes all sorts of sounds all the time, so I drove it and planned to get it fixed the next week.  Well, while driving on the highway, the temp suddenly went into the red, and the truck just shut down.  Coolant was all over the highway.  Now, it's sitting in my garage and either oil or coolant is all over the garage.  I can't afford to have it towed again right now, and I owe $3K still on it. Any ideas what the problem might be?

Answer
I suggest you start by checking your fluids - what's on the ground?  Oil or coolant?

I'm sorry to tell you, if it failed while the temperature gauge was pinned you've probably got a serious problem.

You might want to read the article on my web site about overheating in Rovers.  Look at www.robisonservice.com > service > land rover > articles

Good luck!
