Land Rover Repair: Hood Latch not unlatching, hood latch, spare cable

I have a '99 Discovery II,4L Gas model.  The problem is that I can't open the hood anymore.  It hasn't worked since my wife had brought it in to get the oil changed.  My question is how should I try to get it opened so I can repair it.  I am thinking about having a spare cable ready so I can replace once I get the hood opened.  Thanks in advance as I have used previous answers to help me tackle my own repairs.

Joe, thanks for the kind words.  As for your cable, if it's seized your best bet is to replace it.  They corrode over time and eventually the handle will break off in your hands.  Happened to me. :,

Hi Joe,

you can try this old series trick:  have someone push down on the hood while you pull on the cable.  Usually works.

Most times the cable has seized and should be replaced.  Very difficult to lubricate this cable - perhaps you will have to remove it an soak it in oil.
