Land Rover Repair: 2000 Disco II Hydraulic Lifters?, hydraulic lifters, feedback page

In looking to buy a used 2000 Disco II i was informed that one or more of the hydraulic lifters require replacing and are causing a slight tapping noise at a cold startup.  After a couple of minutes though the sound disappears.  Is this an expensive repair, and is this indicative of a larger issue?  Thanks for the help!

Most of the time we find the noise is not lifters at all; it's exhaust leakage from the manifold.  Repair is a few hundred dollars unless the manifold is cracked.

If the lifters are bad the cost will be a lot higher, near $1,000
