Land Rover Repair: 2001 Discovery II Prop Shaft, shaft bearings, vibration source

Question
Hi John, I recently felt some vibrations from under the car between 1,500-2,000 rpm. The garage identified it as a worn front prop shaft and was not serviceable. After replacement, the vibrations continued. The garage commented that the shaft bearings needed to bed in. I find this odd. Is it true that the bearings need time to bed in? If not, what else could be wrong and result in the vibration? Thanks. Really appreciate any credible advice here. Rgds, Lee.

Answer
The front prop shaft is known for getting tight and vibrating.  If it breaks it can flail around and cause $5,000+ in damage.  If you've got 75k miles on your truck it's just as well they chnaged it.

That said, the bearings don't need to "bed in."  That's just an excuse for a wrong diagnosis.

Keep looking - the driveshaft must not have been the 1,500 rpm vibration source.  Look at motor mounts and bodyand suspension bushings.

Good luck,
