Land Rover Repair: Replacing Diso II 2001 4.0 spark plug wires, spark plug wires, coil pack

Question
I recently had my car to a LR mechanic for misfires and a "shudder"feeling when I am maintaining a steady speed, I could gas through it with power if I accelerate hard. Also the idle is rough. They hooked it up and said it is bad plug wires, The mechanic wants 300. labor and 250.parts. I can buy all the parts online for about 109.00. But I am unsure about how to change the wires. Can you help. Thanks

Answer
The wires are easy to replace, I recommend silicon jacketed wires from Magnecor, they are easier to install and improve mileage and performance.

Do them one at a time, the new ones will be numbered.  There is a wiring diagram in your owners manual that tells you which are which (p153).

Start with Cyl #1, the forward/left side.   carefully remove the boot from the spark plug, and remove the wire from the wire holders.  If the wires aren't numbered, compare the lengths to find the closest fit, with the same coil end connector (straight or 90deg).

Install the new wire exactly as the old one came off.  It might be slightly different length so adjust accordingly.  Do each wire in turn.  The new wire will be fairly difficult to get into the holders, but do not just let them hang.

Make sure the wire isn't touching anything on the engine but the wire holders, and not touching the other wires.  Ensue the wires are fully seated on the plug, and coil pack.  While you have the wire off take a look at the coil pack tower, bad wires can destroy these as well if left too long.

While you're under the hood, poke around and learn a bit, it's the best part of owning a Rover.
