Land Rover Repair: 1996 Disco Rover dashboard / marker electrical problems, light signals, radio folks

Question
Hi John, I am really hoping that you can help us solve this problem.  We recently purchased a 96 disco rover.  We bought the vehicle during the day so we never discovered it till driving at night.  The previous owner had installed a new stereo deck and I believe it is related somehow.  Anyways, when we turn the car on, it goes through it's general checks for ABS, engine light, signals.  But there is no light to the dashboard, no marker lights and no lights to the temperature controls.  I have a feeling that the installer of the radio grounded out the wrong wires and it is shorting somewhere, but I don't know where to look.  Is there anywhere I can find a electrical diagrams as to how the stock wires should be connected?

Answer
There is a good chance you have a bad headlamp/turn signal combination switch.  You have to remove the airbag and steering wheel to change this switch, so it may not be a home project, then again it may, depending upon your abilities.

It is also possible the radio folks cut a wire in the dash or shorted a circuit, as you say.

You can subscribe for a day to Land Rover's service web site, www.landrovertechinfo.com and download the entire electrical troubleshooting book for your car along with any other service information you may desire.  It's a great value for under $20.

If you find our advice useful please give us a good review in the feedback section.

Good luck
