Land Rover Repair: 2000 Discovery II Air Suspension, air suspensions, rough gravel

Question
Lately my 2000 Discovery's rear supsension has been lowering.  Here's the history: 1) It would leak down overnight but would return to mormal height when started.  Plus, manual button on dash would work.  2) I took it to hunting camp on rough gravel road and suddenly the lowering problem stopped. 3) I had Land Rover look at things and they said no problems could be found.  4) A couple of weeks later the problem has returned but now the back will not come back up when engine is started and the button on the dash will not respond (and now the vehicle is out of it's extended warranty by a couple of weeks!).  What are your thoughts and recommendations for this low budget, frustrated owner?

Answer
Hi Roscoe,

leaks are a major problem with LR air suspensions.  They can form almost anywhere and can lead to bigger problems, like burning out the air compressor.  This may be the problem you are having.

Some owners have replace this suspension with a more traditional shock and coil suspension.  Go to Atlantic British if you are considering this option.  They have a kit for sale.

Otherwise, you'll have to rely upon the expensive expertise of a LR dealership.  You may be able to find a local mechanic with LR experience, depending upon where you live.  This can save you some money as local mechanics have access to other resources, such as salvage yards and after-market suppliers.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
