Land Rover Repair: 98 Disco Check engine: P1179, P1137 & P1313, engine management system, catalytic convertor

Question
John,

I have a 1998 Discovery and after servicing the vehicle the check engine light will reappear. Each time I take it to the dealer the charges are very large and the check engine light will come on in a week or so. My daughter and I have chosen to ignore it. Today I went for emmisions testing and the gentlemen told me the reason the light is on is because there are three codes listed, P1179, P1137 & P1313. Do you have any idea what these codes represent?
Kind regards,
Cindy Taliaferro

Answer
Hi Cindy,

P1313:  Misfire Likely To Damage Catalyst, Bank A
P1137:  HO2S Failed To Switch To Rich, Bank "A"
P1179:  AMFR Correction At Maximum Negative Value

Sounds like you may have some misfires that need to be addressed.  IF allowed to continue, it could do some damage to the catalytic convertor.  Could be any number of problems within your engine management system.  Timing, spark plugs, spark plug wires - to name a few.

Believe me, I know exactly where you are coming from...I dread every time I visit the dealer too.  In this case, you'll have to get the engine hooked up to a testbook monitor to determine were the problem area may be.  Otherwise, it's just hit and miss...and that can be expensive.

If you don't like your current dealer, try another (if possible).

Best of luck,

JohnMc
