Land Rover Repair: 98 Discovery has trouble starting, autoparts store, auto value

Question
I have a 1998 Discovery LSE. It's got about 70,000 miles but now has an issue starting.  When we come out to start it in the morning, it will turn over but not start.  This happens roughly the first 3 times you turn the ignition.  On the third or fourth attempt it will start and runs normally.  The check engine light has also just come on.  Any thoughts on what is causing this issue?  Also, would this trigger the check engine light to come on?  Thanks.

Answer
Hi Todd,

to start (pardon the pun) go to a local autoparts store and ask if they can check the OBDII reading on your Disco.  Most Advance auto and Auto Value stores do this for their clients.

I would think that your difficult starts will be linked to the Check Engine light you are seeing.  Get the code(s) and then write me back.  Could be a number of things like O2 sensor, timing, wires or plugs that need attention.

NB:  you could also consider buying an OBDII reader.  They are not that expensive.
