Land Rover Repair: 2003 Disco sputtering with SE light blinking, trouble repair, oxygen sensor

Question
This "event" happened yesterday afternoon and it is still going on this morning on my way to work.  No problem starting the engine.  Every now and then the SE light will stay on (stop blinking) and the engine will stop sputtering ( I don't know if that has to do with the level of RPM's) but it still sputters like mad 95% of the time.  I'm taking it for diagnostics tomorrow a.m.

Question -
I was travelling at about 40-45 mph and my disco lurched and started to sputter, as well as the Se light starting to blink.  The engine was still running, just in a VERY rough fashion any time I'd give it gas.  It seems to run better in 3rd than in Drive, and sputters and vibrates badly when idling.  Is it the fuel filter, an oxygen sensor?  And, what kind of price tag do you think this will have (I understand that it's COMPLETELY an estimate).

Answer -
Was this a temporary condition, or is your truck still running badly, light still flashing?

Answer
I think you have an ignition misfire or sticking valves.  The misfire might be a bad coil pack or wires.  If that's your trouble repair costs are probably under $750.

If you have sticking valves you could be looking at $2500.

Don't drive far before getting this fixed.  The flashing check engine light is warning you of engine damage.  Continued operation could melt the catalysts, causing another $1500 in damage.

good luck,
