Question
i have a 1999 range rover 4.0 se and one day out of nowhere the 'gearbox fault' message comes up. when i put it in reverse its fine, but when i put it in drive it bogs down and dosent accelerate. i have no clue to whats going on. it has been driven very gentle and never abused. can you please help?

Answer
Most of the times I've seen this fault it has been due to a corrosion problem with the small wires in harnesses in the left and right kick panels and under the center console.

There have also been issues with water getting into the wire harness in the door sill area, and sometimes at the transmission connector under the car.

The problem with trying to fix this at home is you have no way to read the signals so you can't tell if you've found the problem.  Therefore you are probably going to have to find a shop to do this for you.

Be wary of shops that start by replacing the ECU because as I said, wiring is more often the issue.  Anyone fixing this is going to need an Autologic or the T4 system.  The ECU may be bad but the wiring should be checked first.
