Land Rover Repair: M & S Green Light Flashing on 2002 Series II TD5, td5, autologic

Question
Hi John,

Our 2002 TD5 ED has finally died. I have the RAC coming tomorrow but I'm curious to have a gues as to what has happening.  Ever since we had the car, we have had the occasional warning flashing on the dashboard.  It's the "M" and "S" lights which are side by side below the tachco.  When they flash, the vehicle seems to want to go into low-range or just not move at all.  If you turn off the engine then restart is usually disappears.

But yesterday it went from bad to worse.  Now the flashing green lights appear but the car won't move in 2nd, 3rd or drive.  It will work in 1st and reverse.  When gunning the engine in the non-working gears, it's lke I'm in nuetral.  We're a long way from a Landrover service centre (300km) so I'm hoping the local garage guy can fix it.  I'd like to be able to give him a bit of a clue or two.

Many thanks,
Peter

Answer
I'm afraid I can't be of too much help on this issue because the TD5 drivetrain is not sold in the United States, where I am.

Generally speaking, though, the newer Land Rover systems can't be effectivey diagnosed with the specialist Land Rover test systems.

If a dealer is too far away you may want to contact Diagnos ( www.diagnos.co.uk ) who make the Land Rover Autologic test system.  They may be able to connect you with a properly equipped shop that's closer to you.
