Land Rover Repair: 1997 Discover starting prob, starter solinoid, starter relay

Question
My neighbor has me to look at his '97 discover (4x4).  My thought is that the starter solinoid is going bad perhaps since he has the intermittant problem of being able to turn his key and only hear a single "click" each time the key is turned.  My thought tells me that the starter relay is throwing like normal, but nothing is happening with the starter itself, OR, the starter solinoid is bad.  Could it be the starter coil? (as he mentioned)  Regarding your answer, how feasable is it to replace the bad part?

Thanks so much

Answer
I'm sure if you search you can find materials to repair the solenoid somewhere, but out shop and every shop I know replaced whole starters for this problem.

There were problems with the original starters on 1997 Rovers and Bosch developed a different replacement.  That brand new starter is what you'll get from a dealer and it's what we usually recommend.

Other people swear by the alternate starter made by Mean Green.

If you want to use a rebuilt unit to save money I suggest a genuine Bosch rebuilt.
