Land Rover Repair: Check Engine Light, obd ii scan tool, land rover specialist

Question
The Check Engine Light came on last night and I'm have no clue as to the root cause.  I'm guessing that this could signal myriad problems, but have limited intuitive skills when it comes to all things mechanical and so was hoping you might be able to suggest a plan of action.  I really, really don't want to walk into the local land rover mechanic without knowing what might be triggering the light coming on.  Thanks in advance for any help or feedback you can provide.

Answer
You are going to need to find someone with the necessary scan tool to read the faults from your Rover.

If you have a 1996 or newer vehicle your fault can be read by any OBD II scan tool.  Most garages have such tools, and they can be bought for a few hundred dollars if you want your own.

If your Rover is older you'll need a specialist Rover test system, which is harder to find outside the dealer network. Look on www.rangerovers.net for a list of shops near you.

Despite your fears, a good Land Rover specialist is probably going to be quickest and best at sorting out your problem.

Here is a link to a magazine article I wrote on choosing a repair shop for your Rover:
