Land Rover Repair: 96 Disco OBD II codes, o2 sensors, testbook

Question
John-

You may have answered this question ad nauseum, but sine I am new, I'll ask:

I'm like you - some crankiness in the '96 Disco I own, but it's like being married to a woman who treats you bad but is always there when you really need her - and you gotta reall ybe in love to keep one of these around.

Anyway - '96 Disco, about 140,000 miles. Dropped liners back at 90,000, had the engine replaced by a kid who was working for the local dealer, but did side work. I had the Check Engine light on since teh sleeves dropped, and never reset the light or cleared codes because  1.) the car ran well, 2. I can't see giving dealer $96.00 to read codes.

I just got an INNOVA OBD-II scanner, and it registered some fault codes. Since I line in NY and need to go through inspection, I'd like to do as much work myself.

How do you locate the O2 sensors. For example - Bank A, position 2 - is Bank A for driver side? Is position 1 before the cat and position 2 after the cat?

In my freeze frame, I have an open loop fault in Fuel System 1 - could this be related to the O2 sensor, or should I be looking for problems elsewhere?

Lastly, I do have the dreaded vibration in the footboard when I accelerate. When I've been under the car and accidently hit the cat pipes when I was working another issue, I heard something that sounded like rattling around inside the pipe - time for a new cat?

Is there a way to inspect O2 sensors for functionality, or just replace as the OBD II scanner says and see if the new one works better? Also, could the engine sleeve drop caused the O2 sensor to malfunction?

Thanks for your help (whatever you can offer). I'll take all of the advice I can get (wish I could afford a Testbook - but I bought the car used and love it, but it is pricey to keep, so whatever work I can do myself....you know).

Answer
Hi Greg,

I like your analogy of LR ownership and a marriage. "...in sickness and in health...".  I wonder if LR owners are better partners...

Sounds like your Cat may be damaged if you hear a rattle.  I've seen some cat's welded, indicating that either the plates were removed or repaired(?).

Could the intense heat that caused the sleeve's to drop affect the 02 sensors...it's possible.

If you want a inexpensive test for 02 sensors, go to

http://www.britishrecycling.com

request a price quote for 2 oxygen sensors for your '96 Disco.

Make sure they unclip them and NOT simply cut them off when removing from salvaged Disco.

Best way to work on O2 sensors is to lower the Y pipe completely.  There is a special O2 tool that you should buy.

Two other websites to try:

http://www.oxygen-sensor-warehouse.com

http://www.oxygensensors.com

lots of insightful information and if you don't want salvaged o2's you should find them here for less than dealer.

Best of luck,
