Land Rover Repair: Whinng Noise and Other Engine Problems, power steering fluid, temp gauge

Question
I own an automatic, petrol, 97 LR Disco SE7. The engine has taken to making some strange whining noise, not unlike a VCR rewinding whenever I turn or accelerate both forwards and in reverse. The noise is only present 75% of the time, and disappears after I reach 20 m/h, but returns when I slow down again. There appears to be something leaking from the front left (drivers' side) of the engine. Could it be the Power Steering fluid, or pump?

Also the engine runs very hot, there are no warning lights and the temperature gauge doesn't show the engine is overheating, but the engine gives off a lot of heat to the point that the automatic gear shift inside the car gets hot.

I live on an island in the Turks and Caicos and do not have access to the owners' manual or Haynes Manual etc., so I have no idea what is what inside the engine. Is there an online engine diagram that you can point me to?

Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

Daniel

Answer
Hi Daniel,

sounds like it could be the PS pump bearing that is seized.  Eventually, you have leaks and it will run dry.  Best to replace this, if it is the culprit.

IF the temp gauge is starting to climb, could be because the serpentine belt is slipping and the water pump is not working properly.  This could be due to the PS pump bearing seizing.

If you remove the serpentine belt and then spin each pulley, you'll probably find the cause of the noise.

Check the fluid levels of your transmission and transfer gearbox.  You could have a leak there too.

Best of luck,
